Shirley E. Duke, a cherished pillar of her community and beacon of joy to her beloved family, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026, at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Milton. Born on September 20, 1933, in Newport, Rhode Island, she was the loving daughter of the late Walter F. Cameron, Jr., and Alice Cameron (Truman) and grew up in the nurturing environment of Quincy, where she completed her education at Quincy High School before furthering her studies at Boston University.
Shirley dedicated 33 years of her life as the esteemed Office Manager for Duke Insurance in Milton, a family business where her exceptional organizational skills and warm demeanor were integral to its success. Her professional accomplishments, while substantial, were just one aspect of her rich life.
Married to her soulmate, the late Herbert A. Duke, for nearly seven decades, Shirley's love story with Herb began with a shared passion for dance. Together, they graced countless dance floors as members of the Viking Club Dance Group in Quincy, their ballroom dancing becoming a symbol of their enduring partnership. Their love was the foundation of a family that would grow to include their daughters, Nancy White of Canton and Sandra Fitzgerald, alongside her husband James, of Virginia.
Shirley's legacy as a grandmother was marked by the same love and guidance she bestowed upon her children. She was the adored grandmother to Jennifer Curley and her wife Samantha, Cameron White and his girlfriend Nadia Alouani, Allison White and her husband Allen, and Amanda Howard and her husband Benjamin. Her role expanded as she became a great-grandmother to Tucker White, Taylor White, and Bo Howard, each of whom brought her immeasurable joy.
Her family circle extended to her late brother Walter F. Cameron, Jr., and she held a special bond with her sister-in-law Jean Cameron of Connecticut. The ties of family and friendship were Shirley's most treasured possessions, and she nurtured these relationships with the same care she gave to her beloved pets, for she was an ardent animal lover.
Above all, Shirley's greatest pleasure was found in the simple moments spent with her family. Whether it was a lively family gathering, a quiet afternoon with her pets, or a dance with her husband, these were the times she cherished most.
Shirley E. Duke lived a life marked by love, dedication, and grace. Her departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but her spirit will continue to inspire and guide her family and friends. Her dance through life was elegant and full of passion, and the memories she created will forever be a waltz of cherished moments in the hearts of her loved ones.
