Robert Gattereau Obituary

Robert Gattereau, often referred to as Robi or Paren, age 94, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, at Melrose Wakefield Hospital.

Robi was a man of God.  He would read the bible daily and spent countless time teaching his children about the word of God and how to pray.  Above all else, Robert was a devoted family man whose greatest pride and joy were his children and grandchildren. A beloved husband to Gabrielle Gattereau, he shared a lifetime of love, partnership, and unwavering commitment. He was a dedicated and nurturing father to Nadege Gattereau and Dimitri Gattereau, and a caring father-in-law to Betty. As a grandfather, he found immense happiness in his granddaughters, Elizabeth and Katherine Gattereau, cherishing every moment spent with them and delighting in sharing life’s simple pleasures. He was also a devoted uncle to his nieces and nephews. He often praised their great accomplishments. His love for his family was the foundation of his life and the legacy he leaves behind.

Born on April 7, 1931, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Robert deeply cherished his parents.  He was a devoted son to them and talked about them often, especially the times he spent working closely with his father taking care of his farms, producing and selling coffee beans. He loved and cherished his siblings deeply. He was a man of a few words, short tempered but quick to forgive and forget.

He later ventured into the production of essential oils like vetiver and lime essence.  Robert’s dedication to service was also reflected in his work in politics. He served as a Deputy in Port-à-Piment, Haiti, where he was respected for his integrity, leadership, and steadfast commitment to the people he represented. He approached this role with humility and purpose, always striving to make a meaningful difference.

Robert carried a deep and lifelong connection to his homeland. He was not only a proud son of Haiti but also a passionate advocate for its people. Throughout his life, he remained deeply committed to uplifting his community back home, always seeking ways to support and improve the lives of others. His generosity and sense of responsibility extended far beyond his immediate circle—he was known as a man who gave freely, helped selflessly, and believed strongly in giving back.

A lifelong learner, Robert valued education and personal growth. He completed his schooling in the southern region of Haiti called Les Cayes, building a strong intellectual foundation that would guide him throughout his life. He had a deep love for western movies, geography and literature, passions that brought him joy and that he eagerly shared with his family, enriching their lives with culture, conversation, and curiosity.

Known for his honesty and straightforward nature, Robert was a man of principle. He spoke with sincerity and acted with kindness, earning the admiration and respect of all who knew him. His philanthropic spirit and quiet acts of generosity touched countless lives, leaving a lasting imprint on both his community and his family.  His nephew Edwin would say, “Ton By was a man of strong character and a natural leader, deeply rooted in his faith.  He led with wisdom, strength and love, always guiding and supporting those around him. “

Though he was predeceased by his nine siblings and survived by his brother Roro, Robert’s legacy lives on through the many lives he touched. He will be remembered for his compassion, his strength, and his unwavering dedication to those he loved and served.

As we honor and celebrate the life of Robert Gattereau, we remember a man whose love, generosity, and commitment to others will continue to inspire generations to come. His memory will forever be cherished.
