Robert J. Byron “Bob”, of Milton, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025 with his family by his side. Born on April 26, 1947, in Boston, MA, Robert's life was marked by devotion to family, service to his country and community, and a love for the simple joys in life.

Raised in Milton, Bob was a standout athlete at Milton High School, leading as captain of both the “Whiz Kid” Hockey and Baseball teams. His leadership on the field was a precursor to the dedication he would later show in all areas of his life. After high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy on the Airforce carrier USS Independence. His commitment to service continued long after his military days, as he joined the Milton Fire Department, where he served as a lieutenant with distinction until his retirement in 2002. It was at that point he had one of his greatest honors in passing the torch to his son Chris, who actively serves as a lieutenant for MFD.

He was the beloved husband of the late Mary C. (Callahan), who, during a long battle with multiple sclerosis, received compassionate care at The Boston Home in Dorchester. Every day until her passing, Bob was by Mary’s side—helping with small tasks, greeting staff by name, and becoming a familiar presence in her care. His quiet, unwavering devotion throughout their life together was, to all who knew them, the very definition of true love through “sickness and health” .

He was a guiding light to his children, Megan A. Vaccaro and her husband Stephen of Quincy, and Christopher R. Byron and his wife Maura of Milton. His siblings, James Byron of Plymouth, Janet Chase of Hanover, Patricia Ambrose of Milton, Jeanne O'Connell of Norwell, and the late Paul Byron, will remember him as the oldest of the six, who was always there with words of encouragement and a helping hand whenever needed.

His role as a grandfather was one of Bob’s greatest sources of pride. His five grandchildren, Nick & Colin DePalma, Abby and Matthew Vaccaro, and Brendan Byron, will carry with them the memory of their Papa’s presence and support, starting when he provided childcare when they were very young and then throughout their many sporting and school events. He will undoubtedly continue to root his oldest grandson Nick on from above as he plays baseball in college starting in the fall. Bob’s passions extended beyond his family as well. He loved hosting his annual yard sale with his pal and fellow firefighter Bob McGee. He was an avid collector of antiques and attended many area auctions where he was always looking for the next rare treasure. He had a great love for all Boston sports, with a particular fondness for the Bruins and Red Sox.

The impact of Bob's life is immeasurable, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. His warm smile andgenerous spirit will be his lasting gift to his family and friends. Bob lived a life that exemplified strength, kindness, and love—a life that will be honored and remembered by all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
