Obituary

Normand Barcelou, age 91, of Milton passed away April 10th at home.  Born, raised, and educated in Fall River, he was a proud Veteran of the Korean War, where he served two tours in the United States Army. He then served in the United States Navy as an Electrician’s Mate, Third Class aboard the USS Columbus. He also engaged in the Amphibious Airborne Invasion of Vieques and served in the United States Army Reserve.  While serving in the Navy, he met the most beautiful woman, his beloved Susie, at Mosley’s on the Charles.  They married and had four children.

After serving in the military, Susie helped him study and pass the police exam, where he went on to serve as a Boston Police Officer for thirty years before retiring in 1987.  During his career with the Boston Police, Normand worked in East Boston, the Traffic Division, Mattapan, and Roxbury, but he particularly enjoyed his time serving as a motorcycle officer in the Mobile Operations Patrol Unit where he received multiple letters of commendation. He took great pride in his profession and so did his family, with two of his grandsons, Owen & Ryan, following in his footsteps as police officers. After retirement, he worked as a Campus Safety Officer for Curry College for 10 years.

Norm, Red, Dad, & Pepe; he answered to all, but his favorite was answering to Pepe. He enjoyed collecting and playing with toys as much as the grandkids, and always had candies and sweets for them to enjoy. Never did he disappoint with a short supply.

He was a simple man who enjoyed his home and family with backyard pool parties, BBQ’s and camping trips across the country in a pop-up trailer covered in stickers from stops along the way. He also enjoyed square dancing, the police bowling and softball leagues, poker games and New Year’s Eve parties that would last half the night.

In his downtime, he enjoyed reading or watching old Western’s in his rocking chair, always with a cup of hot black coffee in hand.

Normand had a good sense of humor and a quick wit, which became more evident to his family as they cared for him in the final days of his life.

Normand was faithful in a quiet and modest way. Although later in life, unable to attend mass, he would pray daily and looked forward to being reunited with his beloved wife Susie of 39 years.

Normand was a proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather.  He was proud of his family.  He found joy in each individual family member's path.  He supported everyone’s passion; If they were happy, he was happy.

Beloved husband of the late Margaret S. (Peterson).  Father of Diane Tilley and her husband Kevin of Milford, Nancy Coughlin and her husband Neal of Milton, Brian Barcelou and his wife Jan of Hyde Park, and Kristin Murray and the late Patrick Murray of Marstons Mills. Brother of the late Albert Barcelou, Edna Normandin, Rita Levesque and Irene Pinault.  Normand is also survived by 11 grandchildren (Kaitlin and her husband Mark, Meghan and her husband Lou, Ryan, Andrew and his wife Rebecca, Kristina and her husband Edward, Justin, Jake, Michaela, Seamus, Owen, and Maggie) and 7 great grandchildren (Isabella, Hanna, Olivia, Cameron, Patrick, Ander, and Isabel).

Visiting hours at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home 326 Granite Ave Milton Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass at St. Elizabeth’s Church, Milton Thursday morning at 10:00am. Burial Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne Thursday at 1:30 pm.
