Mortimer "Buzz" McGrath Obituary

Mortimer "Buzz" McGrath, age 81, a cherished and respected member of his community, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 16, 2024, at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, MA. Born in Somerville, MA, Buzz's presence was a beacon of strength and compassion to all who knew him.

Buzz's life was a testament to his dedication and love for his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean M. McGrath, with whom he built a beautiful life filled with joy and mutual support. A devoted father to Paul McGrath and his wife Laura of W. Bridgewater, Buzz's guidance and wisdom will forever remain in their hearts. His role as a grandfather to Caitlin and Ryan McGrath was one of his most cherished titles, as he imparted lessons and laughter in equal measure. Buzz is also lovingly remembered by his sister Maureen Ahern of Chelmsford, predeceased by her husband, Don, his sister Carolyn "Connie" Laughlin of San Marcos, CA, and Nuala Dacey and her husband Bob of Arlington. He was predeceased by his brother Gerald McGrath, whose memory he held close.

Buzz's academic journey was marked by his commitment to learning and service. He attended St. Mary's High School in Cambridge, where his leadership qualities first began to shine. He went on to earn his BA from Lowell Tech and later graduated from Suffolk Law School, laying the foundation for his professional achievements and his dedication to justice and the rule of law. A proud Army Veteran, Buzz served his country with honor in Vietnam, a period that shaped his character and deepened his love for his nation.

Professionally, Buzz McGrath was a pillar of reliability and excellence. He spent 32 years as a Division Manager for Boston Edison, where his leadership and expertise were invaluable. Upon retirement, he channeled his knowledge and passion for helping others into his Tax and Probate Legal Practice, serving his clients with the utmost integrity and care.

Beyond his professional life, Buzz was deeply committed to his faith and community. An active parishioner at St. Agatha's Parish in Milton, he served as the Chairman of the Finance Committee, a Lector, a Counter, and the Fundraising Chairman during the church's renovation. His contributions to the spiritual and physical fabric of the parish are immeasurable.

Buzz's love for sports and mentorship led him to coach Little League, hockey, and soccer, where he became a role model to many young athletes. His belief in the power of education and the importance of solid infrastructure was evident in his role as the Chairman of the University of Lowell Building Authority, where he oversaw developments that would benefit generations of students.

Mortimer "Buzz" McGrath's legacy is one of unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and his community. His impact on the lives he touched is indelible, and his memory will continue to inspire those who were privileged to know him. As we say farewell to a man of honor and kindness, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of purpose and love.
