With a spirit that touched many, Maureen Sweeney, age 94, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2026. Born on April 25, 1931, in Salahoona, Spiddal (County Galway), she was the cherished daughter of the late Peter Curran and Ann McDonough. Maureen's life was a testament to the joy of companionship and the grace of faith.
Maureen's journey led her from her native Ireland to America at the tender age of 18. Milton, Massachusetts, became her home for 56 years, where she and her late husband, John J. Sweeney, raised a family that would be her pride and joy. Together, they raised their three children: James Sweeney and his wife Beth of Hanover, Ann Sweeney and her husband Michael Blake of Milton, and John Sweeney and his wife Karen of Georgia. She also loved all her siblings: Teresa Dermody of Kildare, Ireland, Thomas Curran of Reading, England, the late John Curran, Bridie Hynes and Patrick Curran of Galway, Ireland, the late Matt Curran of Baltimore, Maryland, and Martin Curran of London, England.
Maureen was blessed with beautiful grandchildren: Alison, Caroline, Olivia, Kristina, and Joshua. The family circle expanded with the arrival of her great-grandchild, Katheryn, who brought great joy to Maureen's later years.
A woman of unwavering values, Maureen was a devout Catholic who lived her beliefs through her actions and kindness. Known for her culinary skills, Maureen filled her kitchen, the heart of her home, with laughter, conversation, and the aromas of traditional Irish dishes.
Maureen had a wonderful sense of humor, and her zest for life was evident in her passions. Maureen found happiness in spending time with family on the beach in both Harwich and Fort Myers. Even in her later years, Maureen's passion for life never waned. She treasured her visits with friends, sharing stories and creating memories that would be fondly recounted.
We celebrate Maureen’s life as beautifully lived and a true legacy of love that will continue to guide the lives she touched. Her memory will be held dear, not only as a reminder of what we have lost but also as an inspiration for the kindness and warmth we can bring to the world. Maureen's spirit will forever dance on the shores of the places she loved, in the prayers she offered up, and in the embrace of her family who adored her. Rest in a greatly deserved peace, Maureen.
