Mary Cobb Obituary

Mary S. Cobb, a beacon of love, kindness, and faith, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2024, at the age of 96. Born on February 1, 1928, to Mary Starr and Thomas Smith, Mary's early years were marked by the loss of her father and the subsequent years she spent under the nurturing care of her grandmother. Her mother's remarriage to George Nelson expanded her family to include two beloved step-siblings, Ellen and George Nelson, both of whom predeceased her.

Mary's passion for education led her to Boston University's Department of Education, where she earned her teaching degree. Her commitment to shaping young minds was evident throughout her long and distinguished career as an educator in Milton, primarily at Collicot School, where she taught 3rd and 4th grade with unwavering dedication. Her pursuit of excellence in education continued as she obtained her master's degree in counseling, serving briefly as a school counselor before returning to her true calling in the classroom.

A leader among her peers, Mary served as the president of the teachers' union, advocating for the rights and professional development of her colleagues. Her influence extended beyond the classroom as she became an integral part of the Milton School Committee for over a decade, contributing significantly to the Milton School Building Committee and the revitalization of the local schools.

Upon her retirement from teaching, Mary's zeal for education did not wane. She joined Curry College, where she played a pivotal role in arranging student teaching placements for aspiring educators until the age of 85. The friends she made working there became lifelong friends to this day.

Mary's devotion to her faith was evident in her lifelong membership at St. Agatha's of Milton, where she found solace and strength. Her final years were spent at Winter Valley, where she continued to live independently and with purpose, enriching the lives of those around her with her warmth and spirit. She was also an active participant in the Milton Council on Aging, who helped provide her with her independence and daily activates. She especially cherished the drivers.

Mary's legacy is one of enduring love and service. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Cobb, and her loving daughter, Mary Ellen Cobb. Mary's memory will be held dear in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her, and her contributions to education and her community will continue to resonate for generations to come.

Mary S. Cobb's journey through life was marked by resilience and compassion. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we celebrate the profound legacy she leaves behind—a legacy of nurturing countless young minds and hearts, and of a life lived with grace and purpose. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide us, just as her presence enriched every life she touched. Rest in peace, Mary S. Cobb, and thank you for the lessons and wisdom you taught us all.
