Karen Joyce Obituary

Joyce, Karen M., age 63, of Quincy, originally from Dorchester, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Sunday, September 9th.  Devoted mother of Katherine R. Filipe and her husband Erik of Marshfield, Timothy R. Elliot and his wife Gina of Stoneham, Matthew S. Elliot of Dorchester and the late Daniel P. Elliot.  Cherished grandmother of Patrick Elliot, Khristiana Johnson, Giovanni and Daniela Elliot.  Dear sister of the late Patrick Joyce.

Karen was a graduate of Fontbonne Academy in Milton.  While raising her family in North Weymouth she emphasized passing on her generosity of character to her four children. She was often looked upon as a Mother to the other children of the neighborhood and made sure that everyone knew her door was always open to those in need. After raising her children, Karen put herself through college, and graduated from Aquinas College in Milton.  She then returned to the workforce as a medical assistant and worked for many years at both Braintree Medical and later the Carney Hospital in Dorchester.

Karen loved, above all things, spending time with her family.  She was as selfless as they come, and sacrificed endlessly for her children and grandchildren.  She was the kind of person who would give you her last dollar.  She was a supremely caring individual, always concerned about others and their wellbeing above her own.  She was kind hearted, and always saw the best in everyone. She was blessed to have a group of cherished lifelong friends.

Karen was a creative person who enjoyed trying new hobbies. Her favorite pastime was cooking. She loved to cook for people. She was always on the search for new and unique recipes which she would find while watching the food network and scouring magazines.

She was always a champion of the underdog.  She loved music, especially Bruce Springsteen.  She loved to dance.  She loved the holidays and especially loved spoiling people during Christmas time.  She loved playing cards, and if you happened to beat her, she would accuse you of cheating.  She loved to shop and loved taking trips to New York City.  She was an avid animal lover and we would be remiss if we didn’t mention her love for her four-legged grandkids, Rocky and Vito.

Those wishing to do so can make donations to the American Heart Association, 300 5th Avenue, Waltham, MA 02451-8750  in Karen’s name.
