Karen Lynne Barnes Jordan, a beacon of faith and wisdom, was called to her eternal home on May 24, 2025, just shy of her 76th birthday. Born on May 28, 1949, in Weymouth, Massachusetts, Karen's life was a testament to her unwavering commitment to her family, her profession, and her Lord. She departed this world in Burlington, Massachusetts, leaving behind a legacy of love, education, and advocacy.
Karen's journey began as the cherished daughter of Harold and Christine Barnes, who predeceased her, and she grew up alongside her devoted siblings, Harold Barnes Jr. and Bonnie-Lee Davis. Her path was one of continuous growth and service, as she nurtured her own family, including her beloved daughter, Amy Pakkala, and her treasured grandsons, Cole and Wyatt Rathman. Karen's love for her family was a radiant light that guided her every decision and action.
A lifelong learner, Karen's pursuit of knowledge led her from the halls of Silver Lake Regional High School, where she graduated in 1967, to the esteemed Mass General Hospital School of Nursing, where she earned her diploma in 1970. Her thirst for education did not wane as she furthered her studies at Curry College, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1984, and at UNC Greensboro, where she completed a Master of Science in Nursing in 1986. Karen's academic achievements were not merely for personal gain but were the foundation upon which she built her career of service.
Throughout her illustrious career, Karen served as the Executive Director of both the Alabama Nurses Association and the Georgia Nurses Association. She was a respected former ANA delegate representing the Massachusetts Nurses Association. Her professional titles—MSN, RN, CAE—were a mere glimpse into her extensive contributions to the nursing community. Karen's commitment to her vocation was further exemplified by her active membership in the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and her involvement with the American Legion Auxiliary Post 63 in Winter Garden, Florida.
Her intelligence and loving nature were evident to those who had the privilege of knowing her. She was an avid reader, always seeking to grow in her knowledge and understanding. Travel brought her joy, and she cherished the experiences and memories made during her journeys.
Karen's life was a beautiful symphony of faith-filled moments, intelligent conversations, and loving encounters. She walked this earth with grace and purpose, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her. As we celebrate her life, we are reminded of the words of Matthew 5:16, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Karen did just that, and her light will continue to shine brightly in the memories of those she touched.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday June 28th at 11:00am at Milton Cemetery.
