Joan A. Peterson, a beacon of love and generosity, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2024, at the age of 93. Born on November 30, 1930, to the late Theodore and Kathleen (Duffy) Saunders, Joan's life was a testament to her unwavering spirit and her ability to touch the hearts of everyone she encountered.

Joan's journey through life was shared with her beloved husband, Charlie M. Peterson, with whom she built a large tight knit family. A devoted mother to Kathleen Greene of NC, Mary Doran of FL, Charlene Peterson and Charles Peterson, both of Dorchester, Linda Peterson of Lexington, Paul Peterson of Boston, and the late Mark Peterson and Lance Peterson. Joan's legacy is carried on not only through her children but also through her cherished grandchildren: Lori Greene, Chandre Greene, Derek Sugrue, Jared Sugrue, Alexandra Greene, Matthew Peterson, Elyce Cripps, Laura Peterson, the late Erika Peterson, Cassandra Peterson, Jim Mylett, Mark Peterson, Lucas Doran, and Ryan Doran. Her love further extends to her 12 great-grandchildren ranging in age from 13 to 1 year, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Educated at Boston City Hospital School for Nursing where she earned her degree as a Registered Nurse, and UMASS Boston where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Gerontology, Joan dedicated her professional life to the care of others. As a NICU nurse at Boston City Hospital, she provided comfort and care to the community’s most vulnerable. Her commitment to service extended beyond her professional life as she took on the role of a Girl Scout leader, influencing young lives with her wisdom and kindness.

Joan's passion for giving knew no bounds, as she supported numerous charitable causes, particularly those focused on environmental preservation, medical advancements, wildlife protection, and more. Her advocacy work with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and for the elderly showcased her deep concern for the well-being of others and her desire to make a positive impact on the world.

An individual of many interests, Joan was known for her funny sense of humor, which brought joy and laughter to those around her. An avid walker and naturalist, she found solace and inspiration in the beauty of nature. She never missed an occasion; birthdays, anniversaries, and the like for her immediate and extended family.

Joan's life was a portrait of love and generosity.

As we bid farewell to Joan A. Peterson, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of purpose, laughter, and an abundance of love. Her memory will forever be cherished and honored by her family, friends, and all the lives she touched throughout her remarkable journey. Joan's story is not one of an end but a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire and guide us for generations to come.
