James "Doug" Mitchell Obituary
James Douglas Mitchell, “Doug” to his friends and family, passed away on October 13, 2024, at the Ellis Rehabilitation Center in Norwood, MA. He was 88 years old. He is predeceased by his wife, Patricia C. Mitchell, and brother, Charles W. Mitchell, Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Caitlin Mitchell; sister-in-law Nancy Crowley; niece, Carol Gay; and other beloved family and friends.
Born in Grand Rapids, MI, Doug moved a lot as a child, as his father sold farm equipment across the Midwest. He went to a different elementary school every year growing up, and that experience shaped him – he turned to his books and his bike to explore his world, and developed a fierce intellect. His focus was math and science, and he exceled at both, first at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, and later at Notre Dame University in Indiana, where he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees.
After Notre Dame, Doug traveled widely, working at various labs at an array of places such as Brussels, Belgium, and later San Francisco, where he met his wife, Patricia, in 1968. The two met at a boarding house for young adults, and while Pat was keen to get her own place with friends, Doug enjoyed the laundry and meal service too much to pass it up! But the two weeks that they overlapped at the boarding house was enough to cultivate a spark, and the two eventually married in 1972, and settled in St. Louis, MO.
The couple had their only child, Caitlin, in 1982, and because Pat was born and raised in Dorchester and Milton, it wasn’t long before the family made their way east and settled in Sudbury, MA, to be near Pat’s family. In 1989, the family moved to Avon, CT, and remained there up until Pat’s passing in 2021, and Doug’s recent transition to skilled nursing care, in summer of 2024.
Doug’s passion for math and science persisted his entire life, and he was devoted to his work as a physicist, developing complex mathematical proofs on his own. But he was also a lover of mystery novels, accumulating the complete works of Agatha Christie over the course of his life, and enjoying their adaptations onscreen. He would also pore over non-fiction accounts of World War II history, tracing the events back to his first memories as a child, when he heard about the war experience from his parents and their friends.
While Doug lived in New England the last nearly 40 years of his life, he still felt like a Midwesterner at heart, and often talked about its landscape – its fields and bales of hay as far as the eye could see. But he became a New Englander in one crucial way: by cheerfully rooting for the Red Sox. Doug often played baseball as a kid, and was a Detroit Tigers fan all his life; however, the Tigers haven’t had the best luck over the years, so Doug embraced the Red Sox as well, and always had their games on the television.
Doug was passionate about learning and his work, but it was with his family that he truly flourished. He was an incredibly devoted father to his daughter, Caitlin, and much of his time was spent in the care of her as she grew up. He never missed a piano recital, basketball game, soccer match, or theater performance in her entire life. He would also prepare all meals during the workweek for his daughter and wife, and kept the house and cars running smoothly. And while he was happy to let his ladies take center stage at gatherings and events, he always stayed quietly close by, proudly supporting them.
