James Miles Goodwin “Jim” passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 79.

Jim was born in Wildwood, New Jersey on December 2, 1945 to the late Robert Leo and Ruth Elizabeth Goodwin. The fifth child of thirteen, he grew up in the greater Boston area, attended St. Mary’s in Brookline and Northeastern University. Jim joined the United States Marine Corp in 1962. A wounded combat veteran, Jim served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a rifleman and was awarded the Purple Heart. He married his sweetheart, Virginia (Carey), in 1971 and they made Milton their home for over five decades. Jim enjoyed a successful career in the banking industry at State Street Bank, The Provident, ComFed, and other financial institutions throughout New England. He enjoyed traveling both domestically and abroad with Virginia, often visiting family members, Presidential Libraries, and Major League Baseball Parks where possible.

An avid spectator of activities in general, Jim enjoyed coaching youth sports and watching his children and grandchildren compete on many athletic surfaces and artistic venues. If you watched a sporting event with him, he always demonstrated a great retention of player numbers and statistics.  As a lifelong Red Sox Fan, Jim enjoyed attending games at Fenway Park with family and friends sitting in section 25, row 12, seats 1&2 since 1986.

He enjoyed music and dance with an affinity for the Irish variety and lively political debates, should you be willing to engage. Cribbage and other games often accompanied family gatherings and provided an opportunity for broad conversation.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Virginia; son, Sean and his wife Heather, grandchildren Shannon, Patrick, and Brendan of Sanbornton, New Hampshire; son, Kevin and his wife Julie of Hanover, Massachusetts; daughter, Susan and her husband Timothy and grandson Seamus of North Easton, Massachusetts. His siblings; Barbara, Bernadette, Betsy, Raymond, Marianne, Mary Eleanor, Kathleen, Anne, William, Francis, Monica, and the late Robert Goodwin Jr., as well as several nieces and nephews.

Jim will be remembered for his hard work ethic, patriotism, and can-do attitude.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Visiting hours will be held at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home 326 Granite Ave Milton on Wednesday April 2nd from 4:00-7:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday April 3rd at St. Mary of the Hills Church Milton at 10:00am. Burial to follow at Milton Cemetery.
