Dorothy A. Garrity (Ranton), affectionately known as “Tootsie” a cherished soul known for her loving nature, generosity, and thoughtfulness, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2024, at Hancock Park Nursing Home in Quincy. Born in the historical city of Cambridge, MA, Dorothy's life was a testament to the love and care she so freely gave to everyone around her.
Dorothy's journey through life was marked by the deep bonds she formed with her family and friends. She was the beloved wife of the late Arthur E. Garrity, and her devotion to him remained steadfast even after his passing. Dorothy's loving spirit extended to her brother, Robert A. Ranton of Milton, and she held dear the memory of her late sister, Luella Meneely. She was a cherished aunt to Paul Meneely and his wife Theresa of Dorchester, Robert Ranton and his wife Mary of Milton, and Richard Ranton and his wife Ellen of Kingston. Dorothy's legacy continued through her great-nieces and great-nephews, who will remember her fondly for her warmth and kindness. She was wonderful aunt and sister.
Professionally, Dorothy's work ethic and dedication were evident to all who knew her. She spent many years contributing her talents to Filenes, where she formed lasting friendships and left an indelible mark. Later, she brought her expertise and meticulous care to the Department of Agriculture, where her contributions were valued and appreciated by her colleagues.
Beyond her professional life, Dorothy was a woman of diverse interests and passions. An avid knitter and seamstress, she created countless pieces that not only showcased her skill but also her desire to bring comfort and joy to others. Dorothy's love for animals was unparalleled, and her gentle approach to all living creatures spoke volumes about her compassionate heart. Her favorite pastime was to go for long walks, a time she used to connect with nature and the community she so loved.
Dorothy's passing leaves behind a legacy of love and selflessness. Those who had the privilege of knowing her will remember her as a beacon of generosity and thoughtfulness—a woman who lived her life with an open heart and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place through simple acts of kindness.
As the sun sets on the life of Dorothy A. Garrity, her memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those she touched. She lived a life rich in experiences and abundant in love, and for that, she will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Visiting hours will be held at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home 326 Granite Ave., Milton MA on Monday May 20th from 10:00-11:00. A service will be held inside the funeral home at 11am. Burial to follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
