Doris Green (née Campbell) passed away at home surrounded by her family on January 25, 2025, at the age of 100. Born on November 20, 1924, in Boston, Doris lived a life marked by dedication to her faith and family, and commitment to education and community involvement.
Doris was the daughter of the late Francis and Mary Campbell and was the sister of Grace Campbell, the late Ruth Campbell Connor, Allan Campbell, and Edward Campbell. She was raised in Dorchester and attended Girls Latin High School, transferring to Milton High School when the family moved to Milton.
Doris met her husband, Robert C. Green, in Milton, and they were wed in 1946 after Robbie returned from WWII. Together, they raised their family and built a life filled with love and laughter until his passing in 2006. She is survived by her children: Linda Murphy and her husband, Denis, of Mansfield; Peter Green and his wife, Lucy, of Sudbury; Janet Coughlin and her late husband, Richard, of Holliston; Virginia Green of Milton; Robert Green of Washington D.C.; and Barbara Green of Arlington. She also leaves behind her dear lifelong friend, Ginny Wells.
Doris was affectionately known as Grams to her grandchildren, Richard Coughlin and his wife, Cindy, and Cara Versace and her husband, Dave. She was also Great Gramma to Sophie, Penelope, and Dominick Versace.
Doris's academic pursuits and career were a testament to her intelligence and determination. After her youngest child was born, she started working for the Milton Public School System while raising her children. Beginning as a secretary at Milton High School, she went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from Boston College. She later earned a Master's in library science from Bridgewater State College, retiring as the librarian at The Pierce Middle School.
A lifelong member of the Milton Woman's Club and past president of the Club’s Evening Division, Doris made lasting friendships with fellow club members. She had a club charity that she particularly valued – sewing and filling Christmas bags for veterans. For many years she was a member of the St. Elizabeth’s Womens Sodality and also shared her knowledge and faith by teaching CCD. She also served as a Milton Public Library trustee.
Doris's interests were varied and numerous. She loved books, puzzles and card games. Alongside her husband, she enjoyed golfing at the Hoosic Club. A very special trip was her visit to Ireland with fellow women Hoosic members to tour and golf at famous Irish golf courses. She and Rob traveled to many countries in their retirement years. She was also a strong swimmer and enjoyed Nantasket Beach and Little Neck, Ipswich. Doris loved to socialize and entertain friends.
In Doris, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest, marked by a close-knit family and enduring friendships. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doris’s memory to the Milton Public Library.
