Diana Lee Digges Obituary
Born in Baltimore to the late Betty Lee (Belt) and Dudley P. Digges and predeceased by her sister Deborah H. Digges of Baltimore, Diana is survived by her sister Sally S. Digges (James Arnold), of Eastham, MA, her sister Mallory F. Digges of Milton, MA, her nieces and nephew Megan Standing (Trey) of Richmond, VA, Jesse Arnold (Chris Cridler), of Reading, MA, Eugenia Digges of Candor, NY, and Alexei Digges of Milton, MA, and by four great nieces, Abby Standing, Ginny Standing, Emma Grace Standing and Nora Cridler.
A global citizen, Diana lived in Baltimore, MD, Montreal, Canada, Guatemala City, Guatemala, and Cairo, Egypt before settling in Massachusetts two decades ago. Multi-lingual - a fluent speaker of four languages, and somewhat proficient in several others, Diana was also a gifted musician, concentrating on piano and recorder.
In her career, she divided her time between teaching and journalism. A lifelong learner, Diana held a bachelor's degree from McGill University, a Master's degree from the University of Baltimore and a Master's Degree from Simmons College. She was a teacher to young and old, from kindergartners in Guatemala, to university students in Cairo, to high schoolers at TechBoston Academy in Boston. Diana was also a talented journalist, with a career that spanned from the Cairo Times, the largest English speaking newspaper of the Middle East, to Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly and even included the research and writing of the Historic Markers in Baltimore.
Diana was a passionate activist for Social Justice, both here and abroad. She was a prominent advocate of Palestinian rights in the Occupied Territories, and worked with many organizations in the US, Israel and Palestine to achieve justice for the Palestinian people. She was also a climate activist and an advocate for racial justice here in the US. A long-time member of the historic Theodore Parker Church, UU in west Roxbury, she served on the Board and Congressional Committee of UUs for Justice in the Middle East. Within the church, she served as chair of the Social Justice Committee, as well as the Music and Worship Committee, marshaling many of her passions in one place that was dear to her.
She loved the ocean and was happiest at her home in Eastham, where she could regularly walk at Coast Guard Beach, take her dogs to First Encounter Beach and Wiley Park, swim at Herring Pond, bike the countless trails, and endlessly watch her "marsh movie" as the tides ebbed and flowed in the marshes by her house. She loved birding, especially looking for owls, and spent a lot of the time at the Audubon Center in Wellfleet, as a visitor and volunteer.
She was generous, offering her time, money, affection, and her homes to friends and visitors. She would regularly host music gatherings for friends from Point Counterpoint Music School in Leicester, VT, where she studied for many summers. Her house was always filled with friends either making music or great meals and conversations, or both. She was devoted to her nieces and nephew and loved to create special gatherings for the younger generations, donning all kinds of creative costumes while coming up with inventive games and things to entertain.
Her death due to pancreatic cancer creates a profound void in this world.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Theodore Parker Church, 1859 West Centre St., West Roxbury, MA at 11AM on November 12th, 2022. Masks will be required. The Celebration of Life will be held in person and via Zoom.
