Christopher S. Holmes Obituary

Christopher S. Holmes of Dorchester passed away surrounded by his loving family on June 26, 2026 at the age of 87.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Cecelia (Satkevich) Holmes, and his loving son, Justin Holmes, and Justin’s husband, Matthew Amore, of South Boston and Beverly, MA. He was the youngest son of the late Charles and Alice (O’Neill) Holmes. He is also survived by his sister, Gertrude “Trudy” Hynes and her husband Wilfred “Will” Hynes of Milton. He was predeceased by his siblings, the late Margaret “Peggy” Bielakiewicz, John “Ronnie” Holmes, Charles “Pierce” Holmes, Maurice Holmes, Esther “Vera” Seddon, Noel Holmes, and Francis “Dermot” Holmes. He had many loving nieces and nephews.

Chris, or “Christy” to his family, was born in Dublin, Ireland, and immigrated to the United States at the age of 20. He apprenticed in the newspaper industry under his father at the Irish Independent. When he left Dublin, he applied his trade as a sterotyper for newspapers in California and Connecticut before settling in Dorchester where he worked at the Boston Globe for 35 years, first in the trades and later as a layout designer for the Boston Globe Magazine and TV Week. At the Globe, he met his wife of 47 years, Cecelia or “Cis,” while they were members of the bowling league. In retirement, he loved golf and was both a member and employee at Presidents Golf Course where he enjoyed talking with friends, meeting new people, and being out in nature. He had many other hobbies, including fly fishing, fly tying, and photography – especially of birds. He was a regular poll worker for the Boston Election Department where he liked seeing his Dorchester neighbors and helping new voters. He enjoyed the regular Friday “Summit” meetings with his brothers and sisters, where they would tell stories of growing up in Ireland over a bottomless pot of tea. He was kind, quick-witted, and friendly to all – one of the very best.

Chris was a proud veteran of the United States Army and served abroad in Korea. He is a former member of the Boston Newspaper Guild, the Union Printcraft International Golf Association (UPIGA), the South Shore Camera Club, the Men’s Association at Presidents Golf Course, the UMass Boston OLLI program, and a former parishioner of St. Brendan’s Parish in Dorchester.

Visiting hours will be held at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home 326 Granite Ave Milton on Tuesday June 30th from 4:00-7:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Gregory Parish Dorchester on Wednesday July 1st at 10:00am. Burial to follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
