Brian Coffey, of Quincy, passed away on February 8, 2025, at the age of 88. Raised in County Roscommon, Ireland, Brian carried a deep appreciation for his homeland throughout his life. He was known for his quick wit, quiet generosity, and unwavering devotion to family and friends. Whether sharing stories from his youth, offering a helping hand, or enjoying a good laugh, Brian brought warmth and kindness to those around him.
Brian was a devoted husband to Mary Coffey (McCarron), with whom he shared 48 years of marriage. He was a loving father to Damien Coffey and his wife, Laura, of Milton, and a proud and caring grandfather to Brendan and Fiona, who affectionately called him ‘Boopah.’ He is survived by his sister, Brid Coffey, of Ireland, and was predeceased by his parents, Bernard and Mary, as well as his siblings, John, Mary, and Francis.
Brian’s faith was an important part of his life. A devoted parishioner of St. Agatha’s Parish for 43 years, he found strength and community in his Catholic faith. He attended Mass regularly and embraced the values of kindness, service, and humility that guided him throughout his life.
Brian embraced his adopted home in the United States, where he arrived in February, 1963. One of his proudest moments was becoming a U.S. citizen at a naturalization ceremony at the Massachusetts State House in the spring of 1992, a milestone he spoke of often. Upon his arrival in the U.S., he spent time living and working in Providence, RI and New York City, before settling in Boston in 1965.
A skilled butcher, Brian worked for Shaw’s Supermarkets for 20 years before retiring in 2001. He took great pride in his craft, believing that hard work and dedication were the foundation of a meaningful career. An active member of UFCW Local 791, Brian served as a shop steward at Shaw’s, where he looked out for his colleagues and helped ensure fairness in the workplace. He valued the sense of brotherhood within the union and took satisfaction in supporting those he worked alongside.
Brian loved to travel with his wife, Mary, and together they took every opportunity to see the world. They visited Ireland regularly, staying connected to their roots and spending time with family and friends. Their travels also took them to Hawaii, Alaska, the Caribbean, the Baltics, the Mediterranean, and countless other destinations, where they enjoyed exploring new places, cultures, and histories together.
Yet, perhaps his favorite place in the world was much closer to home—Castle Island in South Boston. On his days off, he could be found there bright and early, walking around the Sugar Bowl, sitting on the wall of Fort Independence taking in the view of Boston Harbor, or simply enjoying coffee in the company of friends.
Brian lived a life full of love, hard work, and loyalty—to his family, friends, and community. We love you, Boopah—you will be deeply missed.
