Anne Sullivan Obituary

Anne Sullivan (Adams) of Dorchester passed away at home on April 4th 2024 at the age of 101 surrounded by her loving family.

Anne was one of three children born to Irish immigrants from Cloonfinish, Co. Mayo, Ireland. She was raised on Beacon Hill and Hamilton, Mass. where her father worked as a chauffeur. Anne attended Girls’ High School in Boston’s South End. During the Second World War she volunteered to care for servicemen at the Chelsea Naval Hospital. It was there that she met her future husband, Charlestown native, Thomas Sullivan, before he returned to military duty on the USS Elizabeth Stanton.
Once married, the couple bought a three-decker on Fuller Street where they raised six children. The house was often filled with friends and cousins sleeping over for school vacations. There were many happy memories there. In the summer Anne and Tom enjoyed time with family and friends at their beach house in Marshfield.
Her husband, Tom, worked as a Boston police officer while Anne worked at the Dorchester YMCA and served as a Girl Scout troop leader.
After working at the Y for some years Anne then worked as a benefits coordinator at Labouré College. She retired at age 86, but remained an independent and active woman. Anne loved walking to St. Gregory’s to attend mass and do her errands in Lower Mills. She took the red line to Boston well into her 90s keeping up with the latest fashions.
Anne was the matriarch of the family with eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. An avid reader of fiction, she traded books with her daughters and grandchildren. She also kept busy with her daily reading of the Boston Globe, her donations, her crossword puzzles, and a few Kent cigarettes a day.
The family is so grateful and truly blessed to have had their beautiful mother with them for so many years.
She is proof that you are never given enough time to be with the ones you love.

The beloved wife of the late Thomas Sullivan (Retired BPD). Daughter of the late Thomas and Katie Adams. Loving mother to Linda Sullivan of Milton, Kathleen Sullivan-Sanges and her husband Christophe of Milton, Judith Sullivan-O Donnell and her husband Robert of Quincy, Jean McClain and her husband Dennis of Hyde Park, Ann Ierardi and her husband James of Braintree, and the late Thomas Sullivan Jr. Sister of the late Thomas Adams and James Adams.

Grandmother of Olivia, Loic, Caitlin, Dennis, Thomas, Emma, Joseph, and Erin. Great grandmother of Patrick, Rory, Reece, and Oliver.
