Wilkie, Mary R. (Sgroi), age 97, of Milton, passed away peacefully in Avondale, PA in the company of her loving family on Monday, October 1, 2018. Born in Boston, she grew up in Dorchester and graduated from St. Gregory’s school in 1938. Mary moved to the west coast soon after her marriage in 1948 in support of her husband’s employment. During this time she was employed at Barker Brother’s furniture store in Burbank CA. and attended business classes at USC which resulted in her promotion to company comptroller. In 1951 the couple moved back to Mattapan to be closer to their relatives and start a family, subsequently moving to Milton in the mid 1950’s. From there began an epic journey in which she gave unbounded love, care and support not only to her family and relatives but in particular to her special needs son for over 62 years. It was an incredible story of unselfishness and courage that touched many lives along the way. Over the years Mary made many friends and acquaintances due to her involvement and support of her husband’s and sons’ activities which included Milton High School hockey, the So. Shore Mental Health Assoc. as well as affiliated organizations. All her life Mary was driven by her profound and devoted faith in God. The beloved wife of the late Lloyd E. Wilkie, she was the devoted mother of Andrew F. Wilkie and his wife Sandra of Avondale, PA and the late Stephen E. Wilkie and the cherished grandmother of Ryan, Steven & Elisabeth and Timothy & Cassia. Mary Wilkie was the dear sister of Walter Sgroi of Watertown and the late Ann Moore and brothers Anthony, James, Alfred and William Sgroi. Mary also leaves many adored nieces and nephews as well as their beloved children. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Agatha Church, Milton, Saturday, Oct. 13, at 9am. Visiting hours will be held at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home, 326 Granite Ave., Milton, Friday, Oct. 12th from 4 to 8 PM. Burial will be in Milton Cemetery.
