Long-time Milton resident Marjorie Shaw Jeffries, daughter of Augustine Van Wickle Toland and Quincy Adams Shaw, Jr, passed away on August 29. She is survived by her children, Benjamin L. Jeffries, Linda S. Jeffries, Peter Van W. Jeffries, William Q. Jeffries and Edward F. Jeffries, and her five grandchildren.
Marjorie Jeffries received a BA in economics from Bryn Mawr College in 1950, and an MA in music composition from Connecticut College in 1984. She played an active role in the town as a Trustee of the Milton Public Library, was a driving force behind the library renovation, was a long time leader of the library book group, and was a Milton town meeting member for over thirty years.
A firm believer in land conservation, environmental causes, women’s equality, and bicycling, she advocated for the preservation of the Fowl Meadow conservation area on the Neponset River, the Neponset River Bike Path and promoted cycling.
Music was always an important part of her life. She composed both chamber orchestral music and played the flute, performing locally on many occasions, often her own compositions. Her wide ranging interests included bird watching, mycology, gardening, and drawing. Her uniquely creative style was visible in her home-knit outfits of original designs and patterns including sweaters, suits, hats, coats, and skirts. She was an avid tennis player and an intrepid sailor.
In all her interests and her endeavors, her enthusiasm and commitment touched and inspired many.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at The Milton Club, 193 Central Avenue, Milton, MA 02186
