O’Callaghan, John Joseph, of Milton, died Thursday surrounded by his family after a courageous 4-year battle with cancer. He was 69. Born and raised in Ireland, Mr. O’Callaghan emmigrated to the United States in 1963 at age 22. A professional drummer, he particularly enjoyed playing with Irish show bands popular at the time, including John Foley and the Diplomats, the Terry Landers Band and the Andy Healy Band, in lively venues across Boston such as the State Ballroom, the Intercolonial, the Metropolitan, Kilgariffs, the Irish Rover, the Blarney Stone and Florian Hall. Mr. O’Callaghan was devoted to his wife of 38 years, Catherine (Bateman). The couple raised two sons, Michael J. and Kevin P. O’Callaghan of Milton. He was also a former employee of the M.L. McDonald Painting Company in Watertown. In addition to his wife and sons, he leaves a brother, Stephen P. of Melrose and six sisters, Deborah Molloy, Dolores O’Keefe, Joan Prendiville, Philomena Smith, Noreen Leahy and Marion Sugrue, all of Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, and many nieces and nephews in Ireland and the U.S. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Agatha Church, Milton.
